Ron Paul Sponsors New Data Protection Act

Ron Paul has been consistent in his message that he wishes to protect the U.S. constitution. Now Paul has sponsored legislation to limit border agent's abilities to search digital information.

Ron Paul feels that the border agents should have at least a reasonable suspicion that the person is about to commit, or has committed a crime before their laptop is searched. Paul says right now border agents can search anyone anywhere, and that's downright Un-American.

"The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution acknowledges the right of the people to be secure in their persons and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures. It is unfortunate that it takes legislation to remind border agents of this Constitutionally-protected right, but it is apparent to me that the bill is absolutely necessary," said Paul.

HR 6702, the "Securing Our Borders and Our Data Act" would radically change how agents can search traveler's laptops. Voting for the bill has not yet been scheduled.
