Yao Ming Takes Flag Bearing Seriously

by Lupe Lasano in sports

Yao Ming is taking his job as flag bearer for the home team seriously. This isn't the first time he's been the flag bearer for China, but it's the first time he's done it in front of the home crowd.

"But it will be totally different from my experience in Athens," he said 24 hours prior to the official start of the Beijing Games. "The atmosphere will reach its hottest point. I'm afraid I will have to wear ear plugs."

Yao says that carrying the torch is a lot more challenging than carrying a flag.

"Unlike holding the torch, where you can be relaxed and creative, holding the national flag will be a serious issue," he said. "I will take it seriously."

The 7'6" basketball player plays for the NBA's Houston Rockets. He won't be the only NBA player carrying a flag for a team. Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks is this year's flag bearer for his native Germany.
