TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 26 (UPI) --
Toyota says it is recalling approximately 95,700 Toyota and Scion vehicles sold in the United States due to brake icing problems.
In a statement released from Toyota's U.S. headquarters in Torrance, Calif., the Japanese automaker says the recall affects certain 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corollas, Corolla Matrixes and 2008 and 2009 Scion xD vehicles equipped with 1.8 liter engines.
The automaker said it has determined that if the vehicles are used in extremely low temperatures, there is a possibility that condensed moisture from the positive crankcase ventilation port may seep into the brake system vacuum port and freeze. If left untended, ice could slowly accumulate at the port and in extreme cases may plug it, thus causing the power assist to the brakes to diminish and lead to lengthened vehicle stopping distances.
The recall was placed in effect in 19 cold-weather states: Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, the company said.
