Aussie becomes youngest surf tour winner

MANLY BEACH, Australia, Oct. 13 (UPI) --

Tyler Wright, 14, won the Benchley Classic in Australia Monday to become the youngest winner ever on the Association of Surfing Professionals tour.

The Australian teenager edged 23-year-old Brazilian Silvana Lima in the unimpressive two-foot surf to cap a tournament run that included a win over the reigning ASP women's champion and fellow Aussie Stephanie Gilmore.

This is easily the best day of my life, Wright said in a written statement from the ASP. I'm so stoked. I don't really have the words to describe it.

Wright managed to grab the best of not-so-great series of peaky, wind-driven waves.

I knew Silvana would be dangerous out there so I just did my best to stick to my game plan and get waves, she said.

The win was the highlight of a recent streak for Wright, who qualified for the event by surfing her way through the Oakley Trials last week and also qualifying for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.

The second-place finish moved Lima up to fifth place in the ASP tour standings with Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich leading the pack.
