End of Zimbabwe sanctions urged

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sept. 9 (UPI) --

The Southern African Development Community has called for an end to sanctions on Zimbabwe, a communique issued by the organization says.

The action came at the conclusion of an SADC summit meeting in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, The New Zimbabwean reported Wednesday.

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai left Kinshasha before the closing ceremonies after the regional body failed to discuss his power sharing troubles with President Robert Mugabe.

Tsvangirai had campaigned for Zimbabwe to be placed high on the summit's agenda but instead it was sent to the SADC's panel on peace, security and politics, The Daily Nation of Kenya reported.

Before the summit the outgoing SADC chairman, South African President Jacob Zuma, had promised Zimbabwe's problems would be addressed.
