NHL: New Jersey 4, Washington 3 (SO)

WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 (UPI) --

Zach Parise scored the only shootout goal Saturday to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals.

In regulation, which ended in a 3-3 tie, Parise had a goal and an assist.

Petr Vrana and Andy Greene also scored.

Jamie Langenbrunner had two assists, while veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur made 24 saves on 27 shots in his 542nd career victory, nine victories behind Patrick Roy's NHL record 551 wins.

The Devils have won four of the first five games this season and finished off a four-game road trip with a 3-1-0 mark.

Washington's Alexander Semin tied the contest with his sixth goal this season at 14:49 of the third.

He also scored in the first.

Mike Green (power play) scored once, while goaltender Brent Johnson surrendered three goals on 37 New Jersey shots for the Capitals, whose three-game winning streak ended.
