Maple Leaf Products Recalls Meat Due To Listeriosis Outbreak
Canadian health officials have pin pointed an outbreak of listeriosis to a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto. The strain of listeriosis linked to the plant is particularly deadly, having already caused 4 deaths.
Canada's Public Health Agency also said that 21 other people also have now been confirmed to have the bacterium.
"Because the onset of symptoms of listeriosis can occur up to 70 days after contaminated food is consumed, it is expected that the number of confirmed and suspected cases will continue to increase over the next several weeks," the Public Health Agency said a statement.
Maple Leaf Foods has closed their plant on Bartor road and issued the following statement:
"Tragically, our products have been linked to illness and loss of life," said CEO Michael McCain in a statement. "To those people who are ill, and to the families who have lost loved ones, I offer my deepest and sincerest sympathies."
