The metro region of Charlotte, N.C., faced a frost advisory Monday as a local airport set a record with a temperature of 30 degrees, meteorologists say.

The Charlotte Observer said with National Weather Service stations reporting sub-freezing temperatures Monday, meteorologists forecast another cold night in the Charlotte area followed by warmer weather later in the week. Monday's record temperature for the date broke the prior low of 31 degrees set in 1948.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Tampa, Fla., dropped to a record low overnight as Tampa International Airport recorded a temperature of 48 degrees early Monday. The St. Petersburg Times said Monday morning's temperature broke the previous low for October weather of 51 degrees set in 1927.

Residents of Massachusetts also faced early winter weather as a thin layer of snow fell Sunday in parts of the state, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, The Boston Globe said. National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Thompson told The Boston Herald while Boston temperatures started in the upper 40s Sunday, they quickly fell as much as 15 degrees as the storm approached.

"It's more of a January-February occurrence," Thompson said.

The New York Daily News said heavy rain and winds besieged New York's Queens borough Sunday, leaving more than a foot of water on certain streets. The inclement weather also resulted in a coastal flood warning Sunday that later was downgraded to an advisory.
