OTTAWA, Oct. 20 (UPI) --
Canada's strengthening dollar led to a 6.7 percent monthly surge in travel out of the country in August, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.
Likely for the same reason, travel into Canada was almost unchanged from July at nearly 2 million trips, the report said.
In all, Canadians made slightly more than 4 million trips outside the country, 686,000 of them to overseas destinations.
However, travel to the United States rose 7.9 percent, including 1.5 million overnight trips and 1.8 million same-day car trips, StatsCan said.
Travel from overseas countries was down 1 percent from July as foreign visitors made 335,000 trips to Canada in August. Travel into Canada from Mexico fell 22.9 percent from July, the report said.
Canada's dollar has been on an upward rise in value in recent weeks and has been near-par with the U.S. dollar, which encourages more Canadian travel and shopping south of the border.
