13 die, 41 hurt in China bus plunge

TAIYUAN, China, Oct. 31 (UPI) --

A bus plunged off a mountainous road in China's Shanxi Province, killing 13 people and injuring 41, officials said Saturday.

Authorities said the accident happened Friday afternoon as a bus with 54 passengers was heading from Hebei province to Shanxi provincial capital Taiyuan, the state-owned Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The bus reportedly fell 165 feet into a valley as it wound through a mountainous road in Yangquan city, about 90 minutes from from its destination. The news service said 10 passengers were killed instantly while three others died on the way to hospital.

Three of the 41 injured were listed in critical condition and six were serious wounded, local officials told Xinhua.
