DODOMA, Tanzania, Oct. 31 (UPI) --
A 38-year-old safari guide was killed by a wild elephant in Tanzania during filming for the CBBC series "Serious Explorers," a friend says.
Ryan Wienand said his best friend, Anton Turner, was escorting the crew of the BBC's children's TV program Friday when the elephant charged the safari guide and inflicted fatal injuries, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.
"It's a huge shock and we are all very upset because it such a great loss. He had a pregnant fiancee, who is absolutely devastated," Wienand told the British newspaper.
The Telegraph said the incident took place in the Mburika Mountains area of Tanzania's 21,000-square-mile Selous game reserve. No other injuries were reported.
Wienand told the Telegraph the deadly attack was surprising given Turner's knowledge and experiences with elephants.
"Anton was the most experienced person I have ever known when it comes to elephants, he had an expert knowledge of their behavior," he said.
"So for him to die in this way is a complete freak event. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him."
