After battering the shores of Haiti, Hurricane Hanna is predicted to hit the shores of the Bahamas, the Turk Caicos islands and possibly the Florida coast.
The national weather service has issued a hurricane warning for the central Bahamas, including the Abacos, Andros Island, Berry Island, Bimini, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama Island and New Providence.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for the northern coast of the Dominican Republic that includes Puerto Plata westward to Bahia de Manzanillo. Hispaniola, Haiti and the Dominican Republic were recently hard hit by Hurricane Gustav, leaving hundreds dead as a result of flooding and landslides.
At 5:00 AM EDT Hanna was moving westward at about 5 MPH with maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour. Hanna is predicted to move across the Southeastern Bahamas later today and move near or over the central Bahamas tomorrow. Residents should expect heavy localized rains of 4-8 inches with the possibility of 12 inches in isolated areas.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist has issued a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Hanna. Christ said that his state should be prepared for the possibility of flash flooding and winds up to 111 miles per hour.
