Droid Cell Phone Launch A Hit For Verizon And Motorola
The numbers are coming in for the launch of Verizon's first ever cell phone that uses the Android 2.0 operating system and the launch appears to be a great success.
Mobile analytics company Flurry said that the launch was the best ever for an Android cell phone.
The company estimates that Verizon sold a quarter million Droids in the first full week. This compares very favorably to the 60,000 sold in the first week for the MyTouch 3G.
Apple's numbers are still hard to beat. They sold 1.6 million iPhone 3GSes in their first week.
"To estimate first week sales totals for the myTouch 3G, Droid and iPhone 3GS, Flurry detected new handsets within its system, and then made adjustments to account for varying levels of Flurry application penetration by handset," Flurry said in a blog post. "Flurry additionally cross-checked its estimates against Apple actual sales, released for the iPhone 3GS, which totaled one million units sold over the three days of sales, Jun 19-21."
The successful launch of the Droid phone has to be great news for executives at Motorola, who have been struggling in the cell phone space for several years, mainly due to a lack of blockbuster products.
