Michelle Obama On Sarah Palin - Leave The Kids Out Of It
An unplanned teenage pregnancy is never good news, but Democratic Presidential candidiate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have decided to forgo mudslinging John McCain's VP running mate Sarah Palin on the news that her 17 year old daughter, Bristol is unmarried and 5 months pregnant.
Michelle Obama told Ellen Degeneres "I know that they (the Palin's) care about their kids, and we should let them deal with this issue. This shouldn't be an issue for political discussion."
Michelle and Barack Obama are the parents of two young daughters.
I have to credit the Obama's for dealing with this sensitive matter in such a diplomatic way. Children make mistakes and often times these mistakes result in babies. In 2002, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that there was an estimated 76.4 pregnancies per 1,000 females ages 15-19, so Bristol Palin's pregnancy isn't unique to her age group. Her situation could resonate with families that have had to deal with a pregnant teenage daughter themselves.
Sarah Palin considers herself to be "pro-life" and believes that abortion should only be allowed in cases where the mother's life is in danger. She also supports mandatory parental consent for teenagers that wish to terminate a pregnancy through abortion.
Kudos to Barack and Michelle Obama for leaving the kids out of. This subject has very little to do with Palin's ability to serve as Vice President and even they realized that attacking her for the actions of her daughter isn't fair politics.
