Israel Must Respect 1967 Border

DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept. 5 (TOTI) - According to Syria's foreign prime minister, Israel needs to respect the border created by their withdrawal from Syria following the Six Day War.

The comments came at the end of a four-way summit held in Damascus on Thursday in which Israel and Syria attempted to broker a peace deal.

The summit was attended by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Qatar's EmirSheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Walid Muallem said the 1967 border is "non-negotiable." He also stated that any future talks concerning the disputed Golan Heights must deal with the border issues, which he called "decisive and important."

The fact that President Bashar al-Assad even held talks with Israel led some in his country to lash out.

Druse leader Walid Jumblatt said the four-way summit was merely a ploy by the Syrian leader to strengthen ties with the U.S. and Israel.
