Madonna and Guy Ritchie have had a roller coaster ride of a week. The famous singer and the not quite as famous director are splitting up, if you somehow managed to miss the news. The two, who have three children together, are now getting divorced, despite denying rumors of their imminent breakup for much of 2008. The rumor mill was accurate, as usual, with pundits hinting at a number of reasons the couple would falter. Guy Ritchie was cold and insulting. Madonna had an affair with Alex Rodriguez, etc etc. The two couldn't even decide on what city they wanted to live in, so it became obvious a knock down drag-out fight was inevitable.



On October 15th, the dropped the "bombshell" that they were headed to Splitsville. When they made the announcement, via Liz Rosenburg, Madonna's long time press secretary, she asked that the media "maintain respect for their family at this difficult time." Of course that didn't happen for long, and a number of unsavory allegations quickly made their way into
print.

Fighting was not uncommon in their marriage.

"He would call Madonna old, fat, ugly and wrinkled and said that she was stupid and couldn't sing," said a source. "Their fights would often get heated. A few times Madonna slapped him or poked him."

The past weeks saw Guy Ritchie's father call Madonna "beastly," after Madonna said the Guy was "emotionally retarded." Then Madonna took a subliminal shot at Guy by dressing Rocco, the spawn of their union, in a New York Yankees uniform. This prompted Guy to explode.

"Guy left Madonna a furious message after he saw the photos of Rocco in the Yankees shirt telling her she’d stooped too low," said an insider.

"Apparently, he said he will not tolerate his son being manipulated by her in the same way she manipulates everyone else."

Of course, the main concern for any divorcing couple should be the kids. In the matter of Madonna and Guy Ritchie, there are three children involved, and it does appear that the adults will be willing to drag them through the mud in order to take shots at each other. The affect this might have on developing minds is potentially quite negative. Whether Madonna and Guy end up taking the high road remains to be seen. If they don't, this divorce could potentially turn as ugly as the Christie
Brinkley Peter Cook bustup that was only recently resolved.

Let's hope for the children, peace can be achieved quickly.
