Florida Prepares For Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike continues to loom large as he travels across the Atlantic Ocean. As of 11 AM EST, Hurricane Ike was located at about 150 miles east of Grand Turk Island.

Hurricane watches were issued for parts of Eastern Cuba including the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, Las Tunas, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Camaguey.

As Ike travels towards the United States, Floridians have already begun to prepare for his landfall. Officials in Key West have advised visitors to evacuate the area and tolls on three key roads north have been suspended for residents to leave areas that could be in Ike's path.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist has already made emergency announcements ahead of the storm. He said, "Ike is likely to produce sustained hurricane force winds exceeding 115 mph, flash flooding, rip currents, storm surge and tornadic activity. Rough surf and large waves produced by Hurricane Ike could cause moderate to major coastal flooding and beach erosion."

A tropical storm warning is in effect for the northern coast of the Dominican Republic and the northern peninsula of Haiti.

The southeastern Bahamas and the Turk-Caicos Islands are under a hurricane warning while the central Bahamas are under a hurricane watch.

Ike is currently a category two hurricane that's moving westward at 16 miles per hour and could hit Florida as early as Monday.
