Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is preparing to archive and display any newspaper that will allow them. Google will handle the costs of digitally formatting the archives newspaper pages and placing them online. Once they're up, Google will earn advertising revenue.
Google will also share revenue with the newspaper partners. In a sense, it's a win-win for Google and the newspapers. The newspapers gain more exposure for archives that are essentially not being displayed and Google gets paid.
Google will use the same technology that powers Google Books. People online can view the newspapers in their original format using a viewer made by Google.
"We're launching today with millions of articles," Marissa Mayer, Google Vice President of products and search said.
