A Lot Of Hype About Second Life

A Lot Of Hype About Second Life.
If you've been paying any amount of attention to the news, chances are you've heard of Second Life. It's a virtual life online where people are said to flourish.. some people even claim thay they are making a real life living off this game. One weekend long ago I decided to log into this virtual reality to see if there was anything behind the hype I was getting down my wires.
Second Life is a cash, rather a Linden, based economy where residents can buy just about anything they can in real life.. clothing, homes, jewelry.. you name it. Residents can gamble, do business, go clubbing or find gainful employment within the community. Real life skills translate in Second Life. If you have experience with 3-D modeling/rendering or a background in architecture, you'll have fun. If you're an internet
loafer you'll probably find yourself dancing for Lindens or sitting in camping chairs for 10-30 minutes at a time for a nickels worth of real cash.
I'm going to share my experience into the world of Second Life.
In order to play the game, you have to download their software client. That took about a half an hour and crashed my video card. (Add $70.00 for a replacement card.) I finally got "in", picked my faux name, selected my body type etc. and headed off to Initiation Island. That's the place where all "newbies" land when they first begin the game and you learn important stuff like how to fly, how to walk, how to teleport and other
basic navigational basics in the "grid." (What the universe is called within the game.) You also get the chance to mingle and chat (via keyboard) with other newbies.
At the time I joined up they must have been running a multi-national PR campaign that made the grid choppy and slow. Many of the long
time residents were complaining about slow response times from the huge influx of people coming and going. Many of my own attempts to teleport to Reef Island got nipped in the bud as I failed to connect to their server or the area was "full" with only 95 people there. I was trapped
in a world where bodies didn't come with nipples and flying wasn't nearly as fun as I thought it would be. Many of the folks I "bumped" into
came from foreign lands and appeared to be more lost than I was.
Throughout the next week or two after signing up, the grid experienced a lot of downtime and blog posts at the Linden blog indicated that they were having a number of technical problems and merchants were losing transactions. That was about 2 months ago.
I know that just because I decided Second Life was boring doesn't mean that Linden Labs is slowing down their PR campaign. They've recently started
promoting travel within the grid but real world travel still tops it in every sense of the word.
Today I decided to log in to see if much has changed in Second Life, and it did. My software was outdated and needed to be upgraded. Instead of the upgrade I hit the Red X and went to Control Panel -----> Add Remove Programs.
Do you have an experience in Second Life you'd like to share?
