Green Tea and Weight Loss - Is it Right For You?
Green tea and weight loss now have scientific proof for the correlation many have made over the years. Green tea often praised for its cancer fighting properties, has joined the ranks of fat fighters. A recent study in the "International Journal of Obesity" shows that the tea actually increases the calories burned so weight loss occurs.

When people digest food their body creates heat from the metabolization of food. This generation of heat called thermogenesis. When healthy men consumed green tea the thermogenesis increased along with the energy they expended and the fat that they burned.

The study suggested that green tea and weight loss coincide and it may be worth considering supplements containing green tea to aid in the process of weight reduction.

New studies show that rat's fatty tissue thermogenesis increased substantially with various doses of green tea The same results of thermogenesis did not occur with caffeine alone. The same study combined the green tea with ephedrine and did the same with the caffeine. Again there was little effect from the caffeine and ephedrine, whereas the green tea combined with both caffeine and ephedrine showed even more raises in the thermogenesis level. Again green tea and weight loss formed a link to one another.

A study done at the University of Connecticut by Richard Bruno and colleagues reported to "The Journal of Nutrition" that the benefits of the tea might actually be from blocking fat. In the study they found that lab rats that had genetically been raised to have an obesity gene, gained less fat and fewer pounds when green tea extract was in their food supply. They also had the benefit of lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The levels of green tea extract translated to the amount that 7 cups of tea would give to a human. These same results have yet to be studied on humans so caution needs to be taken when considering these results.

Even though all the studies prove quite positive, if you drink seven cups of green tea to wash down 14 doughnuts, it's not going to improve your chances of losing weight. Green tea and weight loss only occurs if the diet is not adjusted upward. It is a great aid for those that embark on a calorie-restricted diet. The tea creates a sensation of fullness when consumed before meals, much as a tall glass of water does. If your tea is not sweetened with additional calories from sugar or honey, just the act of filling your stomach helps you to maintain a calorie restricted diet and therefore is an aid to the loss of weight.

While green tea and weight loss seem to be partners, the antioxidants in the tea are additional benefits that make its inclusion in your daily diet a big plus. There are no harmful side effects from tea compared to those from other diet products, and it has been consumed for years. Green tea a long enjoyed beverage now finds itself as the new drink to make you thin and healthy at the same time.
