Hurricane Ike Path Update

Texas continues to prepare for Hurricane Ike, currently a category one hurricane, prior to his predicted landfall Saturday morning.

Evacuations have been ordered for Texas residents that have special needs and medical conditions and Texas Governor has already declared 88 coastal communities disaster areas ahead of Ike's landfall that could impact anywhere from Corpus Christi to Houston.

Hurricane Ike is currently a Category 1 hurricane, but the storm could gain strength from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and become a category 4 hurricane, if conditions are right.

Ike battered Cuba for days with heavy rains and high winds before finally blowing off the island. At least four deaths are blamed on the strong storm.

Ike is moving in a west-northwest direction at about 9 miles per hour with sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the northern coast of the Gulf, including the city of New Orleans and Lake Pontchatrain to the Mississippi- Alabama border. A hurricane watch is in effect for Cameron Louisiana westward to Port Mansfield, Texas.
