Alaska's Don Young wins 19th House term

JUNEAU, Alaska, Nov. 5 (UPI) --

Veteran Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, edged Democratic state Rep. Ethan Berkowitz to keep the seat in Congress he has held since 1973.

Young, 75, fought off Berkowitz in an election season that featured Gov. Sarah Palin's run for the vice-presidency and the conviction of another longtime Alaska politician, Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, on corruption charges.

Young most recently was a vocal opponent of the controversial bailout plan for Wall Street and has been a steadfast ally of the oil industry, one of the state's largest industries.

Berkowitz spent 10 years in the state legislature and received the endorsement of the Anchorage Daily News.
