Kickin' It Old Skool - Movie Review
by Terry McPherson in movies

The Funky Fresh Boysz BreakDance Their Way Into The Future

Justin is 13 years old in 1988 when he's leading the Funky Fresh Boys in a bitter dance battle against a rival gang of breakdancers. Justin knows his crew is behind, so he does a aredevil move which has rather unfortunate consequences for him, but hilarious results for the viewers. Just lands on his head and ends up in a coma for 18 years.

One day, when his parents are finally ready to pull the plug on him, a miracle occurs: he recovers. The movie quickly finds its' pace after Justin gets out of the hospital and has to deal with a radically changed world, even though he still has the emotional maturity of a 13 year old. Justin digs up all of his old friends for a reunion. Jamie Kennedy does a very good job of portraying Justin. The character is so physically and emotionally hapless that you instantly feel for him. He's really about the purity of breakdancing, and his innocence is a refreshing reminder of how much things have changed in the last two decades.

Lots of laughs, mostly of the ribald sort

Justin even rekindles his old relationship with the hot Jennifer, played by the gorgeous Maria Menounes. The Boyz are old and lame, Jennifer is looking to settle down with Justin's old rival Kip, and the road to redemption for Justin will come through a dramatic $100,000 dance contest where he'll finally get a chance to set things right.

The movie will not be funny to everyone. There is quite a bit of offensive humor aimed at almost all races and ethnic groups. Plus, you might just have to a bit older to understand some of the humor. I'm not sure everyone will understand how Justin is trying to kill himself by consuming "Pop Rocks" and Pepsi, but if you are old enough, it will be one more hilarious moment in this movie. In essence, this movie has the same basic premise as countless others. You should always follow your dream, no matter how crazy it might seem to others.

I saw this movie over the weekend and laughed so hard I had to go the bathroom. It definitely helps if you know some 80's trivia, otherwise the genius of the movie is lost.
