As of 1 PM Ike was still over 200 miles away from the coastal town, but the storm surge is just a preview for what's in store over the coming 24 hours. The National Weather Service advised residents in low lying areas "to flee or face certain death, as Ike is expected to bring waves as high as 50 feet, along with high winds and up to a foot of rain.

Along with Galveston Bay, some parts of the Louisiana Coast are also flooded. The National Weather Service reports that water levels have already risen about 5 feet and that the surge area could extend further than usual due to the size of the cyclone.
Houston Mayor, Bill White said, "It will be, in candor, something that people will be scared of. A number of people in this community have not experienced the magnitude of these winds."
