Wind farm opponents air new argument

WINDSOR, Ontario, Nov. 20 (UPI) --

Southwestern Ontario opponents of what could become the largest wind farm site in Canada raised new concerns the turbines would endanger private airstrips.

Councilors gave approval for Brookfield Renewable Power to erect 350-foot high wind turbine towers at an Essex County council meeting Wednesday night,

However, several residents said planners had overlooked the safety of more than 20 private airstrips in the county, the Windsor Star reported.

Bill Anderson of the Essex County Wind Action Group told the Star he was considering an appeal of the council's decision to the Ontario Municipal Board, but was concerned with the cost of hiring expert consultants.

Throughout the region this year, various town councils have heard residents' arguments against the $600 million wind farm projects, including lower property values based on unsightliness, higher taxes because of revenue sharing, noise, vibration, and the risk of collapse or broken blades, the report said.
