Postal carrier accused of stealing mail

IPSWICH, England, Nov. 21 (UPI) --

Britain's Royal Mail said a postal carrier has been arrested after he allegedly kept mail meant for hundreds of Ipswich, England, residents.

The Royal Mail said it opened an investigation with Suffolk Police after residents of two Ipswich streets complained about mail going missing, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The 36-year-old mail carrier was arrested and a raid on a property tied to the case discovered a "significant" number of letters and parcels dating back as far as four years, the Royal Mail said.

"We can confirm a postman has been arrested in Ipswich over allegations of theft and delay of the mail following the recovery of a significant number of items at an address in the town," a Royal Mail spokeswoman said. "Investigations into the case continue and we are working closely with police."
