Woman gives birth at Calif. train station

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., Nov. 21 (UPI) --

A woman gave birth to a baby girl Friday at a San Leandro, Calif., railway station, a Bay Area Rapid Transit spokesman said.

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said the woman, who was accompanied by her 2-year-old child, went into labor at about 7 a.m. Friday at the top of the station's escalator, the Bay City News Service (San Francisco) reported Friday.

Johnson said the mother was assisted by a station agent and a police officer until paramedics arrived at the scene to help deliver the baby.

The spokesman said the mother and her newborn were taken to the Eden Medical Center where they were reported in good health.
