AAA expects 5m stranded holiday drivers

HEATHROW, Fla., Nov. 21 (UPI) --

AAA expects 5 million motorists will get stranded while driving during the holiday season, officials of the automotive organization, based in Florida, said.

The motor club said an analysis of data from previous years indicates the organization will provide towing services to 2 million motorists during the November and December and will jump start or replace 1 million batteries.

AAA said it also expects to help 800,000 drivers who become locked out of their cars, more than 650,000 motorists who experience tire trouble and more than 1000,000 people whose cars become stuck in snow or ice.

"Cold temperatures and wintry weather take their toll on vehicles, especially if they have not been properly maintained and prepared for winter," said Marshall Doney, vice president of AAA Automotive. "Now is not the time to defer vehicle maintenance or be without a motor club membership. Both are essential in guarding against unexpected repair and towing expenses and becoming stranded this holiday season."

The organization suggested motorists have their vehicles inspected at AAA-Approved Auto Repair shops to ensure the cars are ready for the winter roads.
