Tom Lantos, Republican congressman of California, has passed away at age 80 from complications from cancer of the esophagus.He died at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center in suburban Maryland.

He was the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress. Lantos was born to Jewish parents in Budapest, Hungary, and was 16 when Adolf Hitler occupied Hungary in 1944. He survived by escaping twice from a forced labor camp and coming under the protection of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who used his official status and visa-issuing powers to save thousands of Hungarian Jews. Many of his relatives, including his mother died in the Holocaust.

The congressman said he "was an American by choice." Our condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues of Mr. Tom Lantos.
