Jurors to reconvene in cyberbullying trial
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 26 (UPI) --
Los Angeles jurors in the cyberbullying
case of a Missouri woman were set to begin a second day of deliberations, officials said.
After deliberating the case of Lori Drew for six hours Tuesday, jurors asked U.S. District Judge George Wu if they could be hung on one count but unanimous on the others. Wu ordered them to continue deliberations for a second day, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Drew, 49, of O'Fallon, Mo., was charged with conspiracy and illegally accessing MySpace.com's computers in an alleged scheme to harass, trick and embarrass a 13-year-old girl, who later committed suicide. Prosecutors say Drew and an 18-year-old associate invented an imaginary male 16-year-old MySpace character to woo and then dump the girl, whom Drew suspected of spreading gossip about her daughter.
Drew's defense attorneys say the charges hinge on whether she was aware of MySpace's terms of usage, which they say she was not.
I don't know how they could be hopelessly deadlocked
after such a short time deliberating, the Post-Dispatch quoted Wu as saying before jurors re-entered the courtroom Tuesday.
