Alleged drunken driver run over by own car

SANTA FE, N.M., Nov. 26 (UPI) --

New Mexico State Police said an alleged drunken driver was run over by his own vehicle after he failed to shift it into park at the end of a police chase.

Investigators said Roy Aguilar, 21, was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run collision in the parking lot of a Santa Fe, N.M., restaurant and motorists on Interstate 25 began calling the state police Drunk Busters hot line shortly after the incident to report Aguilar driving erratically in his pickup truck, The (Santa Fe) New Mexican reported Wednesday.

State Police Officer Grace Romero caught up with Aguilar on New Mexico Route 16 at the Cochiti exit from I-25 and the suspect allegedly led the officer on a 10-minute chase before driving off the road into a large patch of dirt. Romero said. Aguilar got out of the car and the vehicle rolled backward, running over the suspect's left leg and both of his ankles, the newspaper said.

Police said Aguilar had shifted the car into reverse instead of park. Romero said the dirt in the area was very soft, leaving Aguilar with what are believed to be minor injuries.

Aguilar was cited for driving on a suspended or revoked license and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, aggravated fleeing from police, careless driving and not wearing a seat belt, The New Mexican said.
