Chef packs up gourmet school lunches

NEW YORK, Nov. 26 (UPI) --

New York parents who lack the time or inclination to pack their child's lunch for school can purchase a gourmet one prepared by a Brooklyn chef.

Deborah Snyder, an executive pastry chef, began offering $7 lunches for school children this fall and has had no trouble finding clients, New York's Daily News reported Wednesday.

Packing a lunch stresses people out, says Snyder. Working people don't have that much time but they still don't want to give their kids frozen stuff.

Snyder, 39, says she got the idea for gourmet bag lunches while talking with family friends. Before she knew it, she had signed up a bunch of her son's preschool classmates, the Daily News said.

Each week she e-mails a menu to more than a dozen families that features dishes such as slow-cooked pork shoulder with black beans, yellow rice and peas.

I'm still figuring out how to make money instead of breaking even, Snyder told the Daily News.
