60 dead in Mumbai attacks: hospital
MUMBAI (AFP) --
Nearly 60 people were killed in a series of shootings and blasts across India's financial capital Mumbai late Wednesday, hospital officials told AFP.
"Fifty-eight bodies have been brought in. There are another 50 who are injured, some critical, who have been transferred to the nearby J.J. Hospital," a spokesman for the city's St George's Hospital said by telephone.
The Press Trust of India said that as many as 200 people had been injured in the attacks, which saw heavily armed men with automatic weapons and grenades target luxury hotels in the south of the city and the main railway station.
Two of what police have described as "unknown terrorists" were shot dead on a beach, as gunmen held hostage a number of guests in the Taj Mahal and the Trident hotels.
