Mumbai hit by terror attacks

Gunmen Wednesday shot up India's financial capital, killing dozens.

Press Trust of India reports indiscriminate gunfire and explosions across Mumbai began about 10:30 p.m. In addition to the dead, more than 200 people were injured. CNN put the death toll at 78 while PTI said 60. Police confirmed 26 deaths.

Some 200 commandos were rushed from New Delhi to quell the violence.

Local reports quoted a witness as saying the attackers sought people with British and U.S. passports to take as hostages but IBN said police declined to confirm that report.

Police said they killed two of the suspects who attempted to flee after the attacks. A number of bombs also were defused before they could explode, police said.

Several attackers were reported holed up at two luxury hotels -- the Oberoi Hotel and the Taj Mahal Hotel -- four hours after the attacks began. Explosions and fires rocked the facilities as battles between the attackers and police continued, CNN-IBN reported.

In addition to the hotels, hospitals, a cafe and train station were attacked, police said. There was at least one report of an attack on the local airport on the outskirts of town as well.
