Six Md. prison inmates hurt in stabbings
BALTIMORE, Nov. 27 (UPI) --
A prison official says six inmates were injured during a rash of stabbings at a medium-security prison in Jessup, Md.
State correctional services spokesman Mark Vernarelli said this week's stabbings at Maryland Correctional Institution-Jessup apparently occurred as the inmates were moving from their cells to the cafeteria for lunch, The Baltimore Sun said Thursday.
Wednesday's incidents immediately prompted a lockdown of the prison and an investigation by internal officers and a canine unit.
Prison officials have not offered any information about any suspects or motives for the crimes.
Meanwhile, none of the injuries suffered by any of the six inmates is thought to be life-threatening.
Vernarelli said two of the injured inmates have been transported to Baltimore's University of Maryland Medical Center, while a third was sent to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
The correctional services official told the Sun the other inmates involved in the stabbings did not receive sufficient enough injuries to warrant an outside hospital visit.
