Doctor cited for missing Baby P injuries
LONDON, Nov. 27 (UPI) --
A London doctor has been suspended from practicing medicine for not recognizing Baby P's abuse injuries during a 2007 hospital visit, authorities say.
The General Medical Council ruled that Dr. Sabah al-Zayyat should no longer practice medicine for not identifying the injuries the 17-month-old suffered during months of abuse, the BBC said Thursday.
Baby P, whose true identity has not been revealed, died on Aug. 3, 2007, two days after the hospital visit in question.
An investigation into the infant's death found he had suffered scores of injuries due to constant abuse by his mother, her boyfriend and their lodger.
The council found while al-Zayyat did notice the infant's numerous bruises during the 2007 visit, she did not conduct a thorough medical examination due to the boy's poor attitude at the time.
The suspended pediatrician said in a Medical Protection Society statement that she remains dedicated to children's safety, the BBC reported.
My professional career has been devoted to the care of children. I will co-operate with any investigation to identify whether lessons can be learnt from this case,
al-Zayyat said.
