Heart attack claims noted architect Utzon
COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Nov. 30 (UPI) --
Architect Joern Utzon, best known for designing the Sydney Opera House, has died of a heart attack in Denmark at the age of 90, officials say.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Sydney Opera House Trust Chairman Kim Williams were among officials recognizing Utzon's artistic contributions to the world, The Sunday Times of London said.
Joern Utzon was an architectural and creative genius who gave Australia and the world a great gift,'' Williams said.
Sydney Opera House is core to our national cultural identity and a source of great pride to all Australians."
The kind words from Australian officials came despite Utzon's noted conflict with New South Wales officials during construction of the opera house.
Design and budget disputes forced Utzon to end his involvement with the project seven years before its construction was complete, The Times said.
Australia will honor Utzon -- who died on Saturday in Copenhagen -- on Monday by flying all Sydney Harbor Bridge flags at half-mast.
Utzon is survived by his wife, Lis; and sons, Kim and Jan.
