Sources: Burress shooting to prompt arrest
NEW YORK, Nov. 30 (UPI) --
New York Giants star Plaxico Burress will soon be arrested and charged after apparently wounding himself with a gun, police sources say.
Police sources said Burress, who allegedly shot himself in the leg this weekend while at a New York nightclub, likely will be arrested on felony weapons charges, The New York Daily News said Sunday.
An attorney representing the NFL standout has been actively attempting to avoid charges while Burress recovered from the gunshot wound he suffered in Saturday night's incident, the sources said.
Police spokesman Chief Michael Collins said the bullet in the apparent accidental shooting did not strike the bone after entering the wide receiver's right thigh.
The sources also alleged that Burress' teammate, linebacker Antonio Pierce, attempted to hide the firearm involved in the incident immediately following the shooting.
Pierce took the firearm from the nightclub where the shooting occurred and likely hid it somewhere in New Jersey, the unidentified sources alleged.
The Daily News quoted the sources as saying the accidental shooting occurred when Burress attempted to retrieve a handgun that had fallen down his pants leg.
