Women pilots aim for world record
ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 30 (UPI) --
Two women pilots from Texas and Florida say they aim to set a new record for a single-engine light plane flying westbound around the world.
CarolAnn Garratt, 53, of Orlando, Fla., and Carol Foy, 52, of Spicewood, Texas, are to set off Tuesday in a tiny plane with an interior smaller than a compact car, The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Sunday.
Garratt and Foy are making the flight to raise money to fight Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS, an illness which killed Garratt's mother in 2002 and now affects one of Foy's cousins, the Sentinel reported.
Garratt in 2003 flew solo around the world in the same plane, but at a more leisurely pace, while Foy in 2006 won an all-female air race across the United States in a different plane.
Garratt and Foy plan to take off from Orlando International Airport, and if all goes as planned, are to land again in seven days, 12 hours and 43 minutes.
