Mounties end two-day standoff empty-handed
REGINA, Saskatchewan, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A two-day police standoff on a Canadian Indian reservation in Manitoba ended with no suspect found in a surrounded apartment building.

A heavily armed contingent of Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers surrounded the building Sunday afternoon and evacuated the residents at the Opaskwayak Cree Nation reservation, 400 miles northwest of Winnipeg, the Regina Leader-Post reported Tuesday.

They were searching for Daniel Wolfe, one of six Indian Posse gang members who escaped Aug. 24 from an Alberta prison, RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said.

She said midday Monday, officers stormed the unit after 24 hours of getting no response to loudspeaker calls.

"He may have been there at one point in time, but ... by the time we mobilized and were there and were able to contain the building, we're satisfied that he isn't there now," Karpish said. "He wasn't there in the last 24 hours."

Wolfe was in custody on two counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder when he and five others escaped.

Four of the six fugitives have been recaptured, the report said.
