Shock Jocks Losing Their Value

by Lupe Lasano in this-and-that

Today's airwaves are a lot more daring than what they used to be. Radio stations shock jocks and hosts are willing to say or do just about anything for the sake of listening ears, but their antics and shocking words aren't going over as well as they used to.

A lot of popular radio hosts don't know where to draw the line between humor and being obnoxious and it's starting to cost them their jobs. Networks are silencing these rogue radio hosts one by one.

The first incident that happened on air (which didn't really offend anyone ) was a water drinking contest that killed the "winner." of the event. 28 year old Jennifer Strange won the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii.” contest being sponsored by a local radio station. She drank an unknown amount of water and wouldn't urinate. Shortly after the contest, she spoke with a co-worker and complained of having a headache. They found her dead in her apartment a short time later. These hosts are idiots that didn't check anything before running a silly contest for a video game that probably cost them nothing. They didn't say anything to infuriate a group of people, they were just idiots that deserve to be taken off the air.

Next up is Don Imus. Don Imus has been on the radio since the early 70's He was hired and fired by a number of employers over the years. Most recently he was let go from CBS for calling members of the Rutger's Womens Basketball team "Nappy Headed Hoes." He's seeking monetary compensation for breach of contract. He wants 120 million dollars for being fired.

Recently CBS called off the "The Dog House with JV and Elvis," hosted by Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay for making a prank phone call that was filled with offensive Asian stereotyping. This show was only 3 weeks into production and was cut short at the knees. Jeff and Dan are guilty of calling a Chinese restaurant and ordering "shrimp flied lice," making rude comments and broadcasting the call on air. When Asian Americans expressed their displeasure with their actions CBS canned them, too.

Even Opie and Anthony, popular radio hosts on XM radio apologized for an interview they did with a regular guest they call "homeless Charlie." In the interview Charlie expressed his desire to have sex with Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth. Since XM isn't governed by the FCC or another regulatory body the pair can't get punished or fined for their statements.

What are your thoughts on shock jocks? Are they pertinent or overplayed in today's society?
