Florida won't seek death for Casey Anthony

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 5 (UPI) --

The state of Florida will not seek the death penalty for Casey Anthony, the Orlando mother accused of killing her missing daughter, Caylee, court records show.

Court documents released Friday by the Orange-Osceola State Attorney's office said it was decided "after due consideration of the facts and law applicable to this case" that it was not in the state's interest to seek the death penalty. The Orlando Sentinel said no further explanation was given in the filing and the state attorney's office declined to elaborate.

Casey Anthony, 22, has been charged with first degree murder. Prosecutors say she disposed of her daughter's body and then failed to report the toddler missing for nearly a month.

Orange County sheriff's investigators have based their case in large part on forensic evidence that a dead body might have been stashed in the trunk of Anthony's car.

Anthony has insisted that Caylee -- who was 2 at the time -- was spirited off by her regular babysitter, although the investigation has turned up no evidence that the sitter ever existed.
