Nicaraguan port housing Russian ships

BLUEFIELDS, Nicaragua, Dec. 13 (UPI) --

Several Russian navy ships have called at the Nicaraguan port of Bluefields, bringing humanitarian aid to the Central American nation, an official says.

Russian Ambassador to Nicaragua Igor Kondrashev said the vessels, including an anti-submarine ship, arrived at the port on Nicaragua's Atlantic coast as a strong storm hit the region, ITAR-TASS reported Saturday.

"This friendly visit will last three days. Our ships brought humanitarian cargoes for Nicaragua, including medical supplies, computers, office equipment and electricity generators," Kondrashev said.

The Russian ambassador said poor weather precluded a welcoming ceremony from taking place, but should do little to stop Russian personnel from delivering their cargo.

"Anyway, we shall do our best for taking the humanitarian cargoes ashore. Probably, this will be done with the help of helicopters," Kondrashev told the Russian news agency.
