Jonas Brothers - Kevin Jonas Talks About Songwriting
Kevin Jonas, 21, the oldest brother in the Jonas Brothers recently spoke about a very important part of his band's art - songwriting.
Kevin and his brothers and band mates, Joe Jonas, 19, and Nick Jonas, 16, take a very "hands-on" approach to their music.
In a recent interview with Go! magazine, Kevin Jonas was asked who writes the songs they perform. Kevin answered, "We all do. Together. Some are written by Nick, Joe or me. We have a producer we work with, but we're always in the studio, writing songs and being part of the production, and we play all the instruments on the record."
According to Kevin, the Jonas Brothers were influenced by legendary acts like the Bee Gees, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols. He dished that their parents had a lot to do with it. "We discovered a lot by what our parents listened to. Growing up, our parents would listen to things like Carol King, The Beatles and The Bee Gees. The Bee Gees were a huge influence for us, that's the band you don't even need to say because it's always there as an influence for us."
As for the best songs ever written, Kevin was a bit undecided. He answered, "It's either 'I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea' by Elvis Costello or 'Kiss' by Prince." After thinking about it for a minute, he said, "Oh,oh no, not 'Kiss.' 'Purple Rain' by Prince. If I can have three songs I'll probably throw in "Message In A Bottle" by The Police."
Although Kevin says he doesn't currently have a girlfriend due to his demanding schedule, he says songwriting is an outlet when he finds himself brokenhearted. He told the mag, "When I'm broken-hearted I find it therapeutic to write songs, or go away, disappearing for a while. But the best one for me is to let my music draw me in."
Rumors that Kevin is leaving the Jonas Brothers are untrue and the boys will continue to rock into 2009.
