DOUGLASVILLE, Ga., Dec. 17 (UPI) --
A U.S. woman jailed for refusing to remove her Muslim headscarf, or hijab, in a Georgia municipal courtroom has been released, her husband said.
Lisa Valentine, also known by her Islamic name, Miedah, 40, was arrested Tuesday at the Douglasville, Ga., Municipal Court for violating a court policy of no headgear, Chris Womack, deputy chief of operations for the Douglasville Police Department, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Judge Keith Rollins had ordered her held in jail for 10 days, but Valentine's husband told the newspaper she was released Tuesday evening, although the reason for her release wasn't immediately clear.
Another Muslim woman said Rollins last week ejected her from his courtroom as well. Sabreen Abdul Rahman, 55, told the newspaper she had gone to court with her son when she was asked to take off her hijab. When she refused, a bailiff removed her from the courtroom, she said.
"This is a religious right," she said. "This is unconstitutional. And humiliating."
The Journal-Constitution said the judge could not be reached for comment.
