Winter socks N. Iowa to New York City

NEW YORK, Dec. 20 (UPI) --

A wintery blast came down on New York City, while Iowa was digging out from a foot of snow with more on the way, forecasters said Saturday.

Nearly 4 inches of slushy snow and sleet fell in the New York area Friday, forcing the cancellation of nearly 800 flights at JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports, the New York Daily News reported.

A second winter storm system was expected in New York Saturday night, with forecasters calling for a chance of 2 to 4 more inches of snow followed by warmer temperatures, creating another messy wintry mix for Sunday morning, the National Weather Service said.

Northern Iowa was digging out from a Friday snowstorm that dumped nearly a foot snow in some areas. The Chicago Tribune reported that travel in the state was difficult with snow on ice-covered roads.

Another storm was expected Saturday, with more snow forecast across northern Iowa, followed by bitterly cold temperatures and strong winds that could create near-blizzard conditions. The Des Moines Register said temperatures were expected to plunge below zero Saturday night with dangerous wind chill readings of minus 40 degrees.
