Freegans are making the news today because of a segment on the Oprah show. What exactly is a freegan?

A freegan liberates waste

In essence, a freegan liberates food that would normally go to waste for themselves. The rationale is that much food is being wasted, and by saving some for themselves, they are making the world a better place.

Freegans have enough money to pay for food, but eat discarded food as a sort of protest against over-consumption.

There can be no doubt that too much food is thrown out daily, especially in a world that still has starving people. The Freegan Lifestyle is about people doing their best to deal with the waste in a pro-active way.
