Google Friend Connect Growing Rapidly
I haven't seen any official numbers on Google Friend Connect, but the service appears to be taking off, based on the number of widgets I see popping up all over the internet. It's not surprising. Google has created a service that is compatible with OpenSocial widgets and that be easily installed, for free, on any websites.
Anyone can add powerful social networking to their websites in a few minutes
Using a wizard available with Friend Connect, you can easily add widgets to your website. Plus, you can add a powerful membership system that runs smoothly and offers some of the features available on popular social media websites.
With Google Friend Connect, you can add logins, comments, and more, like we've done here.
All you need to do is create the two files, canvas.html and rpc_relay.html and add them to your root server. Then create custom code that launches an Open Social widget.
Right now the offerings of widgets are few, but that should change due to Google's stature on the internet. I already see many tech heavyweights employing friend connect and I imagine an army of programmers are already making widgets.
With this system I can envision a generic universal login and the enabling of social features on the whole internet once you're "logged in." This could be a breakthrough in the world of online, if enough people adopt the technology.
