DERRY, N.H., Jan. 11 (UPI) --
Interstate 93 was reopened Sunday near Derry, N.H., after officials cleared a 59-vehicle accident on the snow-swept road that involved a busload of Boy Scouts.
The Union Leader of Manchester, N.H., reported that the vehicles began to pile up at about 8:30 a.m. south of exit 4.
State Police Sgt. Paul Hunt said as cars started to go off the road, drivers had no place to go and became sandwiched in between other vehicles. He said it took emergency crews four and a half hours to clear the scene.
At least 10 people were taken to area hospitals, officials said.
Among the vehicles in the massive pileup was a bus carrying members of the University of Massachusetts-Boston women's hockey team. The newspaper said team members were trapped temporarily in the bus because of the crush of disabled vehicles around their bus.
In all, 46 cars, three buses, eight light trucks and two tractor trailers were involved in the accident, officials said.
CNN said the pileup occurred after a bus carrying Boy Scouts from Massachusetts came upon an auto accident and stopped. Stephanie Hasenauer, who was traveling with her son on the bus taking about 30 Boy Scouts on a ski trip, said after the bus stopped "at least 30 or 40 cars all piled up behind us."
