Rumspringa

by Lupe Lasano in this-and-that

Rumspringa gives Amish the chance to see the world

The Amish are known for their strange traditions, and Rumspringa is no different. Since the Amish lead isolated lives, far removed from modern society, it has to be a difficult decision to devote your life to the sect.

In order to ensure that youths who are coming of age are ready for the Amish lifestyle for the remainders of their lives, they are allowed to enjoy "Rumpspringa", a time when they go out in the world and experience the world of the "English."

At the end of Rumspringa, an Amish youth can decide to become baptised, and remain an Amish for life. Or they can renounce the baptism and live amongst the English. Most Amish choose to stay.
